Next Annual Seminar
The MaCKiE-2012 Annual Seminar will be held in Ghent on
Wednesday May 30, 2012; the speakers are V.N. Parmon (Boreskov
Institute of Catalysis, Novosibirsk) and Bjarne Andresen (Niels
Bohr Institute, Copenhagen).
Prof. Andresen's lecture will be on Finite-time
optimization of chemical and unrelated reactions, with the
following abstract: Finite-time thermodynamics is useful in
providing bounds on the performance of processes at
non-vanishing rates as well as determining the paths that
achieve these bounds, in other words the price of haste. One of
the methods used is thermodynamic geometry which is based on a
natural metric in thermodynamic state space. I will present
some of the tools of finite-time thermodynamics with special
attention to chemical reactions like A↔B↔C with the
objective of capturing the most B at a given final time. Other
reactions treated are the cytochrome chain in mitochondria and
the light absorbing reactions in photosynthesis. It will be
shown how these methods are equally applicable to other
"reactions" like distillation, economic trading, and data
encoding.

4-6, 2013, and will be held in Chennai, India.

2010
The MaCKiE-2010 Annual Seminar was held in Ghent on May 19,
2010; the speakers were O. Trapp (Heidelberg) and G.S.
Yablonsky (Washington University of Saint-Louis). All details

2008
The 2008 Annual Seminar was held in Ghent on Friday, May 23,
2008. The invited lecturers were Andro Mikelic (Lyon, France)
on Effective Dispersion Equations For Reactive Flows With
Dominant Peclet and Damkohler Numbers and Harry van den
Akker (TU Delft, The Netherlands) on Computational Reactor
Engineering: pretty extreme, extremely pretty. The

form. Prof. Mikelic has also kindly allowed us to publish the
slides of his lecture.
2007
No Annual Seminar in 2007, to avoid confusion with the MaCKiE-2
Workshop held jointly with the NASCRE-2 conference in Houston,

2006
This Annual Seminar featured lectures by Prof. Wolfgang
Marquardt (RWTH Aachen) and Prof. Alexander Gorban (University
of Leicester). Both speakers have kindly allowed us to publish

2005
This Annual Seminar was combined with the Eurokin workshop held
at IFP-Lyon on May 23-24, with
lectures by Andro Mikelic, Gregory S. Yablonsky, Philippe
Sautet, Linda J. Broadbelt, Yves Schuurman and Claude de

2004
This Annual Seminar featured lectures by Prof. Pierre Rouchon
(École des Mines de Paris, France) and Prof. S.
Pushpavanam (I.I.T. Madras, India). All details in the Invitation; the speakers have

2003
This Annual Seminar featured lectures by Prof. Gerhart
Eigenberger (Stuttgart Univ.) and Prof. Vladimir Gol'dshtein

2011
The MaCKiE-2011 International Workshop was held in Heidelberg
from Wednesday May 18, 2011 to Friday May 20. See its dedicated

2009
The MaCKiE-2009 Workshop was held in Ghent, Belgium, Sunday
February 8 (arrival) to Wednesday 11, 2009. Follow this link to

the abstracts). A special issue of Chemical Engineering
Science, dedicated to a selection of the presented work, is in
preparation. For now, there are also Pictures of the Workshop,
