I finally managed to glue two bottles together without leaks. The
trick seems to be to push them firmly together using a stick from the inside
and the scientists' hand from the outside ;-)
This way, the glue is nicely distributed over the whole contact surface
(there remain some large air bubbles, but apparently not enough to let the
water escape). I used "soft plastic glue" which is normally intended
for bicycle tires and rubber boats; no balloons or other funny stuff involved.
The next step of course is testing whether this construction is watertight
under pressure too. As always, stay tuned ...
An interesting idea
is to try and curl the bottles so the glue can fit better.
