The quiz
Below you find eight pictures of young persons who pretend (or are forced by their parents to pretend) that they are serious sailors, ready for long trips
over the ocean. One of these young sailors has later realized that the sea is
not the kind of habitat he would enjoy on a daily basis, and has then become
a mathematician. Nowadays he is a well known researcher in the field of
dynamical systems and bifurcation theory; there is even a certain phenomenon
in bifurcation theory which carries his name (together with some other names).
If you think you have found the picture of the later mathematician and his name
please send me an e-mail with your answer; if the answer is correct I will pay you a bottle of wine at the next conference where we meet. The mathematician in question himself and his wife are excluded from
this competition, but they will get a bottle of wine anyway. At any moment I
can announce here that the competion is over, which will happen when
the number of bottles of wine I have to pay stretches my budget too much...
