How to view these files
.dvi-files: these are 'Device Independent' files, usually generated
by TeX. A lot of (platform-dependent) DVI-viewers are available.
.gif-files: these are pictures. They can be viewed by almost all
browsers.
.gz-files: these are compressed files. They have to be unzipped
first (winzip / gunzip can handle them).
.html-files: the 'native' file format for browsers.
.pdf-files: these are `Portable Document Format' files. This
type of files is taking over `postscript' as standard file format. Recent
versions of `ghostview' can read them, as well as `Acrobat Reader' (from
Adobe).
.ps-files: these are Postscript
files, for which other viewers exist. (e.g. `ghostview').
.tex-files: these are text-files for the scientific word-processor TeX. They can be viewed by any word-processor. However, these files contain hardly readable codes (e.g. for math formulae). It is customary to have such
files processed by the program TeX, producing a .dvi-file. Some .tex-files can only be processed by extensions of TeX. The most frequently used extensions of (=macro-packages for) TeX to typeset mathematics documents are LaTeX and AMS-TeX.
.txt-files: these are `common' text-files, usually with a poor lay-out. They can be viewed by any word-processor.
