Brussels (VUB, building G, room G.6.308)
14:15 - 17:15
Due to renovation works to the elevators between
buildings
F and G, it is not trivial to find the lecture room. In order to access
building G, you have to go to the far end of building G (coming from
the train station) and enter there. Then go to the 6th floor. There
you have to follow the corridor to the end before you reach the lecture
room.
HINT: room 308 is not the door between rooms 307 and 309.
If you come by car, you should ask for a parking bar code by e-mail to
pcara@vub.ac.be

The (abstract) rank of Coxeter groups
Abstract: (joint work with Richard Weidmann) The rank of a finitely generated group G is the smallest cardinality for a generating set for G. We report on ongoing research seeking to determine the rank of some Coxeter groups. We will give some examples of Coxeter groups generated by less elements than the standard generating set, and discuss some classes of Coxeter groups that have rank equal to the cardinality of the standard generating set.

Some restrictions on collineations of finite polygons.
Abstract: In this talk we consider automorphisms of finite generalized polygons. The main
goal is to generalize the existing restrictions on the number of fixed points
of collineations and polarities, also in projective planes. For instance, it is
well known that every polarity of a finite projective plane of order q, with q
not a square, has exactly q+1 fixed flags. We generalize this to all dualities,
using the notion of an absolute element, and we further generalize to
quadrangles and hexagons. This is achieved by generalizing a result of Benson.

Lie algebras from Point-Line Spaces
Abstract: We will investigate a construction of an algebra from an oriented
partial linear space. Sometimes this is a Lie algebra, sometimes
not. We determine the partial linear spaces where a Lie algebra can
be obtained. There are links to extraspecial 2-groups and to
symplectic and orthogonal geometry.
